How GIVIT is helping communities rebuild on the NSW Mid North Coast

3 min read

GIVIT partners with the NSW Government to manage donations.

In early 2025, unprecedented flooding coursed through New South Wales Mid North Coast and Hunter regions, leaving towns like Taree, Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Nambucca and Coffs Harbour devastated. Over 700 homes were deemed uninhabitable, and countless more were damaged beyond repair. Families returned home to devastation - smashed floors, ruined appliances, destroyed furniture, and hearts weighed down by loss.

Almost 2,000 requests were submitted through GIVIT in just one week following the floods. Essential items like whitegoods, bedding, and vouchers were most needed by those displaced or returning to damaged homes.

A smarter way to give.

Rather than sending unrequested items that often create logistical burdens, GIVIT partners directly with NSW Government, local councils, frontline charities, and recovery teams to capture exactly what’s needed - from chest freezers and washing machines to grocery vouchers and baby items. You can choose to fund or give those items through GIVIT’s streamlined online system, ensuring support is delivered where it’s truly needed.

GIVIT's Head of Engagement, Christina Spehr's message is clear: "Please do not take or send unrequested goods into flood impacted areas. This is dangerous and can hamper rescue and recovery efforts. This is a rapidly evolving situation and there is currently nowhere to store these donations, or people available to sort them. If you want to help, please go to GIVIT.org.au to find out exactly what’s needed."

Importantly, 100% of public donations raised for the flood appeals go towards purchasing essential goods and services. Wherever possible, these purchases are made locally to support economic recovery in impacted towns.

Greg's story: hope after the floods.

Meet Greg. He’s a longtime resident of Port Macquarie, living on the banks of the Hastings River where he had built a stable and comfortable home. But that home flooded - twice. After devastating floods in 2021, more floodwaters returned in 2025, sweeping through his unit and ruining flooring, walls, and many of his possessions.

With no family nearby and a mattress as his only salvageable item, Greg returned to what remained of his unit and slept on cold concrete flooring, without electricity or running water. It was a cruel reset that tested both his spirit and well-being.

But thanks to generous donations through GIVIT, Greg was able to install new carpet. The installation brought visible relief and hope. This type of support is crucial to help people get back on their feet sooner

Jeanette from the St Vincent de Paul Society echoed Greg’s story, observing how quickly support could help restore a sense of home - and identity - to those impacted.

The power of one gift: a couple's story of flood recovery.

When devastating floods hit NSW’s Mid North Coast, a couple in their 70s had only just arrived in Australia. Still learning English and unfamiliar with local systems, they suddenly found themselves overwhelmed, displaced, and unsure how to ask for help. Thanks to the generosity of donors, GIVIT provided them with a new washing machine to help them get back on their feet.

“I dropped off a GIVIT washing machine voucher to a couple who lost everything in the floods. They were so touched and wanted to send their thanks - it’s going to make a big difference.” Jenny from Global Care Faith Family, who helped deliver the support.

"She's smiling again": rebuilding hope after the floods.

When floods devastated parts of NSW, for many, it was the second or even third time facing such heartbreak.

In the days that followed, local organisations like Global Care opened their doors to support communities in crisis. With GIVIT’s help, they were able to meet urgent needs - delivering whitegoods, beds, furniture and more to those left with nothing.

One story stands out. A woman who had already lost so much during the 2021 floods found herself rebuilding once again. Her husband had passed away the previous year, and the most recent floods took the last of what they’d built together - her home, her car, and her sense of stability. She had no insurance and no family nearby. She was living in a neighbour’s house, alone and unsure how to begin again.

But thanks to generous donations through GIVIT, she received the support she needed to take those first steps forward. Whitegoods. A new bed. Basic furniture. These simple, essential items restored not just comfort but dignity as well.

In the words of our Jenny from Global Care, who supported this woman: "She really did lose hope at the beginning… but I’ve noticed she’s smiling again. There is hope."

Beyond the flood: a continuing commitment

Recovery from major disasters doesn’t end in weeks - it takes months, often years. For many communities, these floods compounded ongoing crises like drought, bushfires, COVID and mental health impacts. GIVIT remains committed to long-term support across NSW, ensuring local charities and vulnerable communities aren’t forgotten.
